The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance (SAAPA) has collated data indicating that children repeatedly exposed to alcohol advertising are more likely to start drinking younger and more heavily. A study by the the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Western Cape Government surveyed 49-thousand grade 8 and 9 learners across 123 schools. The findings show that 40% have already tried alcohol, 22% drank in the past 30 days while 23% started before the age of 13.
