FOCUS: The Presenter Interviews Zanele Sabela, about the march against GEMS' premium increase decision..... INTRO: The public service unions affiliated with COSATU were united in their outrage over the government's decision to impose a 9.8% member contribution increase for GEMS in 2026. This followed a 13.4% increase in 2025, which was also rejected. From January 2026, members were expected to pay the increased contribution, which GEMS indicated would be revised down to 9.5% from April 2026, totaling a 23.2% increase over two years. Meanwhile, public servants received only a 5.5% salary increase for 2025/26, with projections suggesting even lower increases for 2026/27. Government subsidies increased modestly, by 4.5% initially and only 0.5% from April 2026. Despite advice from the Council for Medical Schemes recommending a 3.3% contribution increase, GEMS proceeded with a much higher hike. This was concerning, as rising medical aid costs far outpaced wages and inflation, leading to real wage erosion and directly impacting workers' take-home pay. mihalnago yo yimela vantirhela mfumu ehansi ka hlangao wa Cosatu va machile ku lwisana na xiboho xa mfumu ku engetela 9.8 wati phesente ya mali ya ndzindzakhombo wa rihanyu wa GEMS eka lembe ra 2026. leswi swi landzela hiku tlakusiwa ka 13.4 wati phesente eka lembe ra 2025 leswi aswi nga bankanyeriwa etlhalo.
