IFRC says rescue teams are working around the clock after Venezuela earthquake

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) says the humanitarian situation in Venezuela remains critical following two powerful earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, that struck the north-central parts of the country. Hundreds of people have been trapped beneath rubble, while many others remain unaccounted for after the earthquakes devastated areas in and around the capital, Caracas. The disaster has killed hundreds of people, damaged buildings, and left thousands homeless. Repatriation of Malawian nationals continues in Durban, says KZN Home Affairs.

The race to complete the voluntary repatriation of Malawian nationals is intensifying in Durban.  This as the June 30th deadline - set down by the march leaders draws closer. About 13-thousand people have already been transported to Malawi but new arrivals continue to gather outside the old drive-in transit camp.  Authorities says the pressure is mounting to process and manage those inside the camp and those still waiting outside. Izinduna are meeting with members of Zulu regiments ahead of 30 June protests. This after ministers in the security cluster met with AmaZulu king Misuzulu kaZwelithini on the issue. Concerns as AI-generated content is increasingly used for fraud and cybercrime.

Despite the benefits of global connectivity, there is also the growing risks of AI-generated content such as deepfakes, which are increasingly used for fraud and cybercrime. Tayyibah Suliman of Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr warns that deepfakes can deceive audiences, enable cybercrime, and damage reputations, often created and shared anonymously. South Africa has already seen cases of identity misuse through deepfakes, including fake executive instructions for fraudulent payments. As these tools improve, it is becoming harder to tell real from fake, making legal and workplace regulation increasingly important. Suspended National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola and over a dozen other senior police officers are due back in the Pretoria Magistrates court today in connection with the 228-million rand Medicare24 SAPS tender awarded to tenderpreneur Vusimuzi "CAT" Matlala's company. Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach MP and DA Spokesperson on Justice and Constitutional Development has raised concerns, following the news that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is negotiating a plea agreement with corruption kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala. Breytenbach says it appears that the NPA is determined to repeat one of its most disastrous mistakes: the slap on the wrist plea agreement concluded with Angelo Agrizzi. The issue has renewed questions about transparency and the justice system's capacity to handle complex corruption cases. Organizations and civil groups declare their intention to go ahead and march against undocumented foreign nationals on June 30.

More than 20 anti-migrant organizations and civil groups have declared their intention to take to the streets come June 30. The groups, say their action will remain peaceful, with no violence, looting, or loss of life. However, their central message is clear: they are calling for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country by Tuesday. At a media briefing, March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma said the movement has broad support across South African society, including political and civil sectors. The MK Party was also present at the briefing. The groups have criticized government spending on security for the planned protests, as well as the response from institutions such as the Human Rights Commission. Municipalities make little progress in improving audit outcomes

Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke says municipalities have made limited progress in improving audit outcomes over the past four years. Speaking in Parliament, Maluleke revealed that only 39 municipalities achieved clean audits, while audit outcomes in metros continue to decline. However, she highlighted improvements in financial reporting, with 61% of municipalities receiving unqualified audit opinions and a record 98% submitting financial statements on time. Ramaphosa urged to strengthen South Africa's criminal justice system

His remarks come as senior police generals challenge IDAC's authority, filing an urgent complaint with the Justice Minister over an ongoing corruption case. Johannesburg MMC for Transport concerned over state of roads in Johannesburg

Johannesburg MMC for Transport, Kenny Kunene, has raised concern over what he calls an escalating financial crisis in the City of Johannesburg, warning that service delivery is under severe strain due to systemic liquidity challenges. Kunene says the crisis has forced the suspension of fuel supplies for the Johannesburg Roads Agency fleet. As a result, field teams have been grounded, halting pothole repairs, traffic signal maintenance, and bridge and infrastructure inspections, which have been deferred until fleet mobility is restored. He warns that this poses serious risks to commuter safety. The city has also seen illegal excavation under the M2 bridge. It came as they confirmed that about 500 Malawian nationals relocated from Cape Town were being housed at a church facility in Newlands, Sophiatown, Gauteng, as part of arrangements with the Malawian Embassy to facilitate voluntary return.
