The official unemployment rate has decreased to 31.9% in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to the latest data from Stats SA. While this is good news, the unemployment numbers in the country remain alarmingly high and while it is the responsibility of government to create a conducive environment for job creation, we also have a part to play. This evening we’re looking at the often overlooked career/entrepreneurial paths that we should be considering.

The African National Congress (ANC) provincial executive committees in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng will be reconfigured within the parameters of the ANC constitution. This comes as the president of the ANC Cyril Ramaphosa gave the closing remarks at the end of the two- day ANC NEC this weekend. Following a dismal performance from the two provinces at the General elections in May last year, the NEC has resolved that the leadership of the two provinces will be changed.

ECONOMIC REACTION & THE 2% proposed VAT

South Africa’s rand and stocks weakened after Parliament delayed the presentation of the annual budget, an unprecedented decision that highlighted increasing strains in the nation’s coalition government.   The rand extended an earlier decline, weakening as much as 1% to 18.5892 per dollar by 14:32 in Johannesburg. By 15:12 is was down 0.5% to R18.52. The yield on benchmark 2035 government bonds climbed 11 basis points to 10.63%.

Chidimma Adetshina’s mother has been arrested by the Department of Home Affairs, assisted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Cape Town over the weekend. Ms Anabela Rungo, the mother of Chidimma was arrested at a property in Cape Town. The Department withdrew Ms Rungo’s South African documentation in September 2024 after finding that it had been fraudulently obtained, rendering her ineligible to continue residing in South Africa. As you might remember, Adetshina's citizenship came under the spotlight whenM she made it to the top ten of the Miss South Africa pageant, with many questioning her nationality due to her name.
